glamour puss!

Hi to all of you glamourous girls out there. Continuing with the theme (from our last e-mail blast) of what glamour means. It means many different things to different people, but most people agree that when they see it, they know it. Seeing Jackie O,(like I once did) on the terrace of the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, after a day of shopping probably waiting for Onassis' yacht, well, anyone would know she was glamourous. I even knew that and I was probably 13 years old. I distinctly remember her white jeans, huge black sunglasses, and black, simple, tee. She was the epitome of glamour!! Her sister Lee Radziwill was with her and the two of them made quite a commotion on la Croisette. My mother was glamourous in quite the same way. She would wear gorgeous cocktail rings with her white jeans and YSL sandals . I remember it like yesterday, vacationing at the Marbella Club with my mother and my sister, Susan. My mother was in her early fifties and boy did she turn heads. She was asked by the English actor/comedien, Terry Thomas for a drink on the terrace and my sister and I peaked over from the pool, giggling! Those were glamourous times. But,there I go digressing again.....
Anyway, all week-end we will have party attire on sale 30% off at Gavin so you can be all ready for the holidays or that special New Year's Eve party. pretty, little, ballet slippers...

I love ballet slippers, they always bring to mind Audrey Hepurn, Bridgette Bardot, Kate Moss. All real style icons in my opinion because they can take a pair of little black pants, ballet flats, and a black tee and make it look spectacular. If your having one of those days when you feel a style bloc coming on....remember chic is easy, throw on some black capris, a cute beret, some red lipstick and put a smile on your face. You will look amazing. On the subject of red lips by the way, you must buy one tube. Blue red for those of us with pale skin looks so chic. Orangey red for those with yellow undertones, think Julianne Moore. Nars has some great reds.....

So happy to have a minute to write something on the blog. With New York market and getting back and dealing with all of the p.o's, life has been a bit hectic. I have to tell you, we have some really awesome things coming in for spring. Some new vendors caught my eye, Tt, Sass and Bide, Iro, Frock, Whitley Kros, Wren, LnA, Illia, and some amazing sweaters from Inhabit. We also made a big buy of Janis Savitt jewelry and I cannot wait to get it in. The Blur bags from Israel are also amazing!!
I have really exciting news, Tuesday I had my picture taken with the master of all masters, the venerable, famous, genius, charming, VICTOR SKREBNESKI!!! It takes a lot to impress an old model like me, I have shot with Lindbergh, Toscani, Demarchelier, Bensimmon, in my opinion, some of the best photographers in the world, but Skrebneski has a very special cache, and he is, as they say in french, an amour. He is the sweetest, plus I had the pleasure of hearing one of his wondeful stories and I was enchanted. I walked in and the first thing he said to me is, you look great just like that, let's shoot you just like that ( I had my boyfriend jeans, an old tee shirt, and my Gryphon fur vest, no make-up, and wild hair). I was over the moon, because my look is so not hair and make-up ready, I was dreading the whole "done" thing. It is definitely a moment I will cherish forever. I am in love with Skreb!!! Look for it in the November TCW.

been away too long.....

Hi everybody,
Sorry I haven't updated the blog, but I was sooooo busy. Since we last talked I have so much to tell you guys. I was in New York with my bff Babeth and her french entourage, my daughter Gavin, my sister susan, and a whole host of other fun people. Emily Schnur, Gavin, and I bought some yummy new clothes for spring at Coterie. We have added some amazing new vendors to our stash, Iro, Sass and Bide, Patterson J. Kincaid, Janis Savitt, are just a few of the new things you will see in the store for spring. We also have some amazing new Vera Wang Lavender label dresses, so chic, sweet and just the right thing for your dance this week-end (Loyola girls, come on in, these dresses look just like you!!!)
Getting back to New York, My french friends and I decided to go to the Carlyle for lunch and who do we see.....President Sarkozy of France and his adorable wife, Carla Bruni. She is so chic, loved her Lanvin dress. Security was everywhere. It was very, very serious. Just when I thought we had had enough, Tony Blair sits down at the table next to us and Elle McPherson was a table away. I guess that 46$ green salad was worth it!! Wait I have one more story. Having dinner at a french bistro next to the Bowery Hotel, (forgot the name...) and who is next to us but Matt Dillon. We all struck up a conversation and chatted with him all through diner!!! He is very sweet, a bit shy, and very handsome.
I'm almost done. Our friends at Pencey were so kind as to invite us to a private party at the Jane hotel. All kinds of fashion trash were there, it was the place to be last Thursday night and Emily and I were there to represent GAVIN!!
That's all for now. I just love you guys and really appreciate the continued support.
p.s. an old and very beautiful friend came by today, Mary Levin, haven't seen her in years and I am convinced she is even more gorgeous than she was 20 years ago. Some girls have all the luck!! Anyway she bought all kinds of fab things to bring on her next trip away with her beau and has assured us she will tell all of her friends about us!!

Hi to all my gorgeous girls! I have been very busy getting kids off to college and to exotic places like Scotland (Torie) or settled into amazing Greenwich Village apartments (Gavin). Cooper's down in the Big Easy at Loyola, and William is getting his freak on in Bloomington with the announcement of the bands that will play for his first big concert Oct. 10th, (his business Fifth Agency produces events and manages musicians....check out the website)
Phew, I know that all of you have the same stuff going on and the great thing about having a store is that you all come in and keep us updated on what's going on in your lives too. Whether it's kids, travel, a new job, or kitchen, or engagement, we love to hear all about it and make sure you are dressed right for the occasion!!
We have two new additions to our Gavin staff. Michaela Jones and Jodi Casati have brought their expertise and talents to make Gavin even better. Michaela has a degree in PR and Marketing and Jodi's resume includes managing Saks up in Highland Park.

Hi Girls, I have to tell you about the E and J shoes. They are absolutely the coolest, the black pump is one of the best I have ever seen and the price is right!!!! 315 dollars of unadulterated chic, bad ass, high, and as my kids say about cool shoes........ Hi all, I am in Tangier, Morrocco. Why???Just because I am. Cooper, my 17 year old son and I, joined my three oldest kids, William, Torie, and Gavin in Mallorca. They had just arrived from a week in Greece. We all spent three days on this beautiful island off the coast of Spain listening to music and having a blast. We hopped on a plane and arrived in Tangier yesterday. I headed right to the medina to shop. Boy did I find some amazing things!! The jewelry is to die for. Big chunky, gorgeous jade, turquoise, and coral....enormous rings to wear with your cool bell bottom distressed jeans. Our white Elizabeth and James tees will be a great background for some of the beautiful necklaces..think the Gettys in Marrakech circa 1968. Calling all hippie girls (and I count myself in that number). It's gonna be a great summer.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you amazing women!! I take my hat off to us for the work and care we offer to all of the people that love and depend on us. We juggle, we balance, we teach, we cajole, we encourage, we scold, we love. We are the rock, the safe haven. This has been an amazing week. I was given the honor of meeting all of the strong men that are behind the women we love at GAVIN. To see them in here, looking uncomfortable, holding scarves and jewelry, blouses and skirts as if they were looking at some terrifying object. We tried things on, explained why this or that is a "must have", wrapped up beautiful gifts for these wonderful men to take home to the women they love! It has been my pleasure and I hope you are enjoying your day!

Hi everyone, last night was such a blast it was so fun to see all of my friends, old and new!! The food was great, kudos to Nancy Sharp and her lovely crew from Food for Thought. The Veuve was flowing and so was the great conversation. I really wanted to thank all of you for your support and never dreamed this would be a shopping night....maybe it was the champagne, but you guys had a riot shopping and socializing! My model girls were here, Cammy and Camille. We used to schelp the runway together, spend hours shooting, and then skip off to a fashion show at the Casino Club. Those were the days.....we were booked all day long and did everything in the city. All three of us were in the same agency, Susanna Johnson. Camille was also in my agency in Paris, Elite, and we modeled there for 6 years before we both headed home to take Chicago by storm. Learning french was the best part of it all, the travel amazing, but I never would have gained my absolute passion for fashion without those experiences. Being dressed by YSL, Sonia Rykiel, or Gautier, changes you, not to mention the most talented stylists in the fashion world. It is my pleasure to be able to share all of this with you. I have never had so much fun and I wanted to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity!!! The party last night was about all of you. We might even make this an annual event, get your chic on and party your self silly, and oh boy were we silly last night. I love all of you. Lauren

babeth and me!

This is a photo of my dear friend, Babeth,and me at the shows in New York. We are at my favorite bistro, Pastis. We go way back to my days of modeling in Paris. Babeth and I were both at Elite and we have a lot of great stories to tell. My french was good enough after spending my junior year abroad at the Sorbonne, but after graduation from Tulane I returned to spend another 6 years there and french truly became my second language. Babeth and I traveled the world together doing shows and printwork and our friendship has lasted all of these years. For a real hoot, google Babeth Etienne, she was married to the biggest French rock star of all time, Johnny Hallyday. Boy do we have stories!!! I was her maid of honor and she was married in George Hamilton's house in Beverly Hills. From there she went on to have a child, make a movie, cut an album and finally create the thing I believe she is the most proud of....Sacatinta, her line of beautiful bags, constructed and embroidered in Mexico. These gorgeous bags are described in an earlier post in this blog and they have been flying out of this store.

Havianas are in!!!

I know it doesn't feel like summer today, but we got a blast of sunshine and warmth in the store! We received our shipment of Havianas sandals and they are waaaay fun! Great looking and well-made and we got a full range of strap-back, highs and slims in a bunch of colors from beige-y neutrals to bright summer orange, lime, purple, yellow, hot pink and turquoise...come on in and feel the heat!!

I had the pleasure of dressing two incredible women, Natalia Zuckerman and Antje Duvekot. They were on their way to perform at Schuba's and gave me the opportunity to pick out clothes for them to wear for their show last Friday night. The whole experience brings to mind a French expression, "bien dans sa peau". It literally means, good in their skin. The French use it to express the idea of a person who is comfortable, confident, at ease. It is about the highest compliment a French person can give, much more important than being beautiful, bien dans sa peau is like the Spanish expression "simpatico", it comes from within. A person who likes themselves in a good way, not "pleased with themselves" which is so yucky, but just cool, in the groove, at peace with wherever they are at the moment. A deep calm confidence... seeing these two women perform Friday night was amazing. They were just so in their element, so "bien dans sa peau". I like to think that my clothes made them feel amazing, but I know in my heart that they are just amazing all by themselves. oxoxo Lauren

Oh boy...some of my favorite artists are in town this weekend!! Natalia Zukerman and Antje Duvekot are playing Friday night at Schuba's...check out the video to see Natalia with Willy Porter (who will be at SPACE in May)! I'm hoping they stop in the store before the show!!

Justin on Oprah...

...talking about the William Rast line. Received this from them yesterday...

As if anyone needed another reason to purchase a pair of William Rast, Justin himself will be sitting down with Oprah this Friday March 27th to talk about…what else…his clothing line!!

This will not be about his music, movie career, or love life…even if Oprah sneaks a question in here or there about Jessica Biel. But he is on the show solely to discuss the success and future of William Rast. Everyone knows what happens when Oprah touches something…it turns to GOLD.

We're very excited to tell you that we've added two fabulous sunglass lines in the store and we will take delivery of our first batch on Friday. From the creative genius David Tang of Hong Kong, we will carry a great selection of his 'Shanghai Tang' brand glasses. We'll also be getting a cool range from Hackett of London. Nothing like some new shades to round out your look!!

It's Spring!!

Well, at least on the calendar. But we have so many cute things for the weather that is coming soon. I love the new William Rast jacket and we have plenty of their jeans in too. And, more great jewelry...the Mima collection has arrived!

'da bulls!!

Anybody see the Bulls game last night? Bulls had a slow start and never ahead one minute until the middle of the 2nd quarter, but after that they were unstoppable. Derrick Rose was on fire and could not miss, fadeaways from all over the court, lay-ups with triple coverage, 3 pointers galore. Kirk was firing his fair share of 3's as well and the new guy Salmons was on a tear.

Alicia Bell shirts!

These are absoulutely wonderful and are flying out of the store. Alica is another wonderful local designer whose shirts are easy to wear to work or just for fun!! They arrived yesterday and are clearly a big hit already. We've ordered more this afternoon!

Only have a second, shop is packed!!! Had to let you know KOVA + T is in the house!!!!! Great lace leggings and really cute tees!

Just got home from an awesome day at the shop. Besides getting some really great James Perse, I also wanted to tell you about my nephew John whose band is playing at the Double Door tomorrow night. His band, the Virginia Gentleman is backing up the Beer Nuts. Check it out, it should be a great time!!

We went to the show on Friday night and it was absolutely incredible!! Theresa Andersson is an amazing artist with a huge voice and energy that fills the room. She's also adorable and has agreed to let G A V I N pick out an outfit for her next television appearance!! (We missed her recent Conan O'Brian gig...boo!) She definitely knows how to 'cassez le 'look"!!

Sacatinta!

More goodies arrived today in the form of a fabulous selection of Sacatinta bags! My dear friend Elizabeth Etienne designs these bags in Paris and has them manufactured by women's cooperatives in Mexico. This fair trade practice allows the women to provide a better standard of living for their families, educate their children and contributes to the general welfare of the communities in which they live.

They are unique, colorful, hand-embroidered and signed by the woman that lovingly created each piece.
